This document describes your Canvas 5.0.2 evaluation kit. It explains installing and personalizing Canvas 5.0.2, and how to obtain an evaluation serial number. It also describes the included electronic documentation, a special edition Canvas 5 Evaluation Guide.
About the Canvas 5.0.2 evaluation package
Your evaluation package contains the following items:
• Canvas 5.0.2 Installer for Mac OS
• Manuals folder with the following:
- Read Me-Evaluation Guide: This document explains how to use
the electronic Evaluation Guide (EVAL_GUIDE.PDF).
- EVAL_GUIDE.PDF: This document includes exercises and a "tour"
to introduce you to Canvas 5 as quickly as possible.
- GUIDE.PDF: Electronic version of the User Guide printed manual.
- PRINT_GUIDE.PDF: Electronic version of the Printing Guide printed manual.
- TOUR: Folder containing the sample files used in the "EVAL_GUIDE.PDF"
evaluation exercises.
- Mac Reader: folder containing the software needed to read the electronic manuals.
• Art Sampler: small sample of the 23,000 pieces of clip art included with Canvas 5
• 3rd Party Stuff: Kodak promo movie
• BROWSEME.HTML: To be opened with a web browser.
• BROWSE: Folder used by the BROWSEME.HTML document.
Obtaining an evaluation serial number (activation code)
To activate an evaluation version of Canvas 5.0.2, you must obtain an evaluation serial number from Deneba software's Internet web site. Point your web browser to http://www.deneba.com/evaluate/ and follow the instructions on the page to obtain an evaluation serial number. Note: your browser must support forms.
After registering on the web site, you'll receive a confirmation message and an evaluation serial number by e-mail. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
If you don't have internet access you can still evaluate Canvas 5.0.2 in DEMO mode
by entering the following activation code: M101-794739625.
In DEMO mode the program will not save or export documents, and some other features,
like pasting in external documents, and Publish and Subscribe, are not available. All documents will print with a demonstration watermark.
Canvas 5.0.2 system requirements
To run the Canvas 5.0.2 Evaluation version, you need the following minimum system configuration:
• Power PC processor
• Mac OS System 7.5 or later
• 16 MB of RAM
• 10 MB of RAM available to Canvas (16 MB or more recommended)
• 20 MB of free hard disk space
• 8-bit color video (24-bit recommended)
To install Canvas 5.0.2
1. Quit all running applications and disable anti-virus extensions. This makes additional memory available and eliminates possible conflicts with the Canvas 5.0.2 Installer.
2. Double-click the Canvas Installer. In the startup screen, click Continue. Read the evaluation license agreement, and then click OK.
3. In the Install location area, use the pop-up menu to choose a location to install Canvas 5.0.2.
4. In the pop-up menu at the top of the Installer dialog box, choose Easy Install. When you choose this option, the Installer copies all of the files you need to begin using Canvas 5.0.2 to your hard disk. In the pop-up menu, you can also choose Custom Install to install specific components of Canvas only, but Deneba recommends choosing the Easy Install option.
5. Click Install. Depending on which installation options you selected, the Installer might alert you that you need to restart your machine after installation is complete. If you see this message, click Continue. When the Installer finishes installing Canvas 5.0.2, click Restart or Quit.
Files and folders installed with Canvas 5.0.2
Installation creates a Canvas 5 folder with the following items:
• Canvas 5.0.2 application
• Canvas Tools folder containing external tools
• Color Inks folder containing preset inks for the Inks palette
• Dictionaries folder containing the Canvas Dictionary and User Dictionary
• Extras folder containing preset strokes for the Strokes palette
• On-Line Help folder containing the On-Line Help system
• Templates folder containing document templates
• Tutorial folder containing Canvas tutorials and a Tutorials-Read Me file that describes how we made the tutorial documents
In addition, installation places the following files in your System Folder:
• Several files for opening and saving various file formats
• CMSCP, KPCMS, and KPFMS folders containing files used by the Kodak Photo CD Acquire Module
• I/O Filters PPC or I/O Filters 68K folders (or both) in the Extensions folder containing import/export file format filters
• Eight files in the Extensions folder that begin with "Kodak Precision" These files are also used by the Kodak Photo CD Acquire Module.
The first time your run Canvas 5.0.2
The first time you launch Canvas 5.0.2, you need to enter your Canvas 5.0.2 evaluation serial number and personalize your copy of the program. If you need an evaluation serial number, see "Obtaining an evaluation serial number" in this document.
To launch Canvas 5.0.2:
1. In the Canvas 5 folder, double-click the Canvas 5 application. The Canvas personalization screen appears.
2. In the personalization screen, type your name, organization (optional), and your Canvas 5 evaluation serial number in the text boxes. Click OK when finished.
You can now begin exploring Canvas 5.0.2. Enjoy!
QuickTime and QuickDraw 3D
Canvas alerts you at startup if Apple's QuickTime or QuickDraw 3D extensions aren’t installed. Click OK to temporarily disable the QuickTime or QuickDraw 3D tools. To avoid the alert at startup, check “Don’t Show Me Again” before clicking OK.
Initializing the Canvas 5 dictionaries
The first time you choose a spell-checking command, Canvas 5 asks you to locate the User Dictionary. In the directory dialog box, open the Dictionaries folder in the Canvas 5 folder. Select the User Dictionary file and click OK.
About this Canvas 5 release
Canvas 5.0.2 provides a number of new and improved features, performance enhancements, and increased stability. Canvas 5.0.2 includes new features for documents, objects, text, and image editing. The on-line Help system is also improved.
After installing Canvas 5.0.2, you can view the Release Notes topic in the on-line Help system. This topic lists the new features and changes in Canvas 5, some of which are not mentioned in the special edition Canvas 5 Evaluation Guide.
To view the Release Notes topic:
1. With Canvas running, choose "Contents" in the Help menu (under the question mark). Or, double-click the "Canvas Help" file in the On-line Help folder inside the Canvas 5 folder. This launches the Canvas on-line Help system.
2. In the Canvas Help window, click the underlined text, "Release notes," on the Contents page.
Electronic documentation
For your convenience, a special edition Canvas 5 Evaluation Guide is included with the Canvas 5 evaluation version. The Evaluation Guide is distributed as an Adobe Acrobat portable document, which you can view on your computer. This document includes tutorials and introductions to many Canvas features. For instructions on viewing the Canvas 5 evaluation guide, view the Read Me document in the Manuals folder.
